K.V.Anand is back with one of those films that wants to make a point about one of the problems in the society. Some of these are succesful and some of these are not, Kavan is on the positive side. I feel Kavan to be somewhat a Side-quel of Ko though the story and the characters aren’t related in anyway it would be acceptable if one says its in the same premise; Media manipulation.
Anand tries to show us how Tv and Media uses its power to show us what we’re allowed to see and not what we should actually see. It also highlights how media is at times stuck in between the right and the wrong having its own strings puppeteered by corruption. Though exaggerated at times it manages to give us a solid story.
The hero of this movie is Thilak played by an excellent Vijay Sethupathi. He moves to Mayilvaganan’s channel after he finds out how his previous channel cares only for sensationalism. T.Rajhendarr plays a crucial role in the movie but his dialogues often seem to lack the flavour it should have had. TR has a slower 1st half and a meaty 2nd half, but his satire was missing throughout the film.
Malar is Thilak’s girlfriend portrayed by Madonna Sebastian. No gripes on her role as she does what the director asked her to. Darshana Rajendiran’s role as a protestor is appreciable and as her movie-boyfriend Vikranth does an surprising and am impressive role. Vikrant’s potential out to be used often.
K.V.A’s writers Subha and Kabil require a special mention as their writing skills are often visible in the scenes and doesn’t make the movie lose it valuable pace. Last time with Anegan K.V.Anand kind of disappointed with a Gaming thriller, but Kavan is a solid film which shows us a peek into the backdoors of TRP-fuelled media. There are some scenes which seem a bit too much but its nothing but the director taking full advantage of cinema freedom. The movie also takes a dig at anchors and channels subtly and gives us a message through it.
Vijay Sethupathi has outdone himself again with Kavan and we hope he continues this stride. VJS makes the best of his role and proves his mettle as an actor. Hip Hop Thamizha has given us some songs which are hum worthy but the bgm is so-so. Do watch this movie as it definitely stand above the average. With a few miss and lots of hits, Kavan gets a 3.5 rating.
